Joan Kessler
has been teaching secondary and post secondary mathematics for over 30 years
starting in Rhode Island where she taught in the Warwick School District,
then later at the Community College of
Rhode Island, Roger Williams College, Bryant College, and 14 years
at Johnson & Wales
University in Providence where she earned the rank of Associate Professor
of Mathematics, developed the Mathematics Honors Program, and won
numerous professional awards. She is also
former President of NEMATYC,
the New England Math Association of Two-Year Colleges.
After moving to Illinois, she joined the faculty at Elgin College as
Associate Professor and as a Online
Education and Distance Learning Specialist. She won the ICTCM
(International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics)
award for Excellence and Innovation for the development an implementation of College Algebra
Online©,
the first online College Algebra course in the nation in 1997. She was
also an online instructor at the University of San Diego and authored an Online
Algebra for Educators course for Houghton Mifflin Higher Education
Division.
She received her Bachelor's degree
in both Mathematics and Mathematics Education from the University of Rhode
Island, and holds a Master's degree in Mathematics from Rhode Island College.
As a lifelong learner Joan has earned numerous post graduate credits in mathematics,
instructional technology, and mathematics education from universities including
Aurora University, Portland State University, University of Miami, Sam Houston
State University, and National Louis University.
Joan has been
a speaker at many local, regional,
an international conferences and workshops including AMATYC, ICTCM, FETC,
T3, the ICME conference in Hangzhou, China, and the
International Mathematics Conference in Paris. She is a T3
Discovery Workshop instructor for Texas Instruments, and co-authored Interact Math Tutorial Software for Pearson
publishers.
Taking a two year leave from the
classroom, Joan served as VP
of Education at LiveMath Software, traveling nationwide to train teachers to
use technology resources in their classrooms. Joan
has taught for the SBBC for the past fourteen years at the College Academy @ Broward College Central
where she chairs the Mathematics Department and is a Nationally
Board Certified Teacher of Mathematics.
This unique dual enrollment program is the most successful program of its
kind nationwide.
Joan is also a
mathematics and technology consultant and mathematics curriculum
resource developer.
